This video is part of our project “From Sifrs to Ciphers: Hip Hop is Muslim"which presents Muslim artists representing the five core elements of hip-hop culture over two years through a series of performances, exhibitions, workshops and dialogues in Washington DC. The goal of the project is to change common misperceptions about Muslims as well as identity, agency and their connection to the arts as a whole. WBL believes that the general atmosphere of ignorance of Muslims and Muslim communities as well as fear and hatred that stem from it often overlook the American-ness of Muslims that has existed for over 400 years. Hip-hop culture is the legacy of this connection and in this exploration by artists presenting existing and new original work, we can help push the conversation around identity further and allow for more knowledge, understanding and bridges to be built.
