The Youth Poet Laureate (YPL) Program offers unique opportunities for young poets to represent their craft and community through their written word. This is an annual joint program of Urban Word NYC and Words, Beats & Life, Inc., with support from local government & partnering organizations. This initiative aims to identify young writers and leaders who are committed to civic & community engagement, artistic excellence, human relations, youth activism, diversity and education across the region.

Other poetry opportunities include the Slamtastic, WBL’s Youth Slam Poetry competition where youth poets ages 13 to 19 take the stage and share their voices in this five-round tournament. Every first Saturday starting December 2023 to April 2024, youth poets have a chance to be named Grand Slam Champion and one of the newest members of the 2024 DMV Youth Slam Team!

Our DMV Youth Slam Team receives exclusive training from our poetry and writing pros and the opportunity to perform at local and national events throughout the year. This is your chance to gain valuable experience and exposure and connect with a supportive community of fellow poets and artists who share your passion for spoken word. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to elevate your poetry and make a lasting impact on the poetry scene.
